obvious reasons to hate Wal-Mart and the like

Perhaps you have a lack of imagination or have simply failed to
try to understand the many reasons that people may dislike mega
companies like Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart and the like offer low prices because they pay low wages and have low overheads because of their huge size and bulk purchasing.
Like McDonald's - when the move into and area they take the business from existing local stores that can not compete with their cut price
offers and so local (often family run) stores go bust and jobs are lost (to be replaced by low paying, mainly part time work offered by the invading mega retail outlets). You may think that this is good for the consumer but it really means a reduction in choice and a loss of small local stores and the growth of shopping malls and out-of-town developments.

You really should not have any difficulty understanding why people might not like your employer, even if you don't agree.
