COMMUNIQUE

Band of Mercy sabotage McDeath

Press agencies in NY received this message about 1:30 a.m. (PST) Wednesday, Oct. 16

An underground animal rights group early this morning (Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996) has claimed responsibility for an early morning "attack" on a McDonald's Restaurant on Route 13 in Ithaca, NY.

In a communique released to sympathetic groups, the Band of Mercy said it had, as of 4:30 a.m. (EST) sabotaged the McDonald's by damaging locks and other equipment, and had dropped a huge banner from the top of the restaurant.

The banner read: "McDeath: Killing Animals, the Earth and You!"

"This is part of a nationwide attack on McDonalds, which sells body parts of tortured animals, destroys the environment and sells unhealthy foods....We are sending a message that this will not be tolerated...we will continue our actions until the atrocities stop," the communique said.

There are nearly 1,000 protests planned at McDonald's restaurants worldwide Wednesday as part of "World Day of Action Against McDonald's." Nearly 50 of those demonstrations are scheduled in the U.S.

Contact for those nationwide/worldwide actions is Mike Duraschmid, McLibel Support Campaign Press Office, 312-282-8236.
