Day 080 - 30 Jan 95 - Page 44
using head only equipment are one amp per sheep and 1.3
amps for pigs". Are you aware of those recommendations?
A. Not specifically, no.

Q. You are not?
A. Not in this context.

Q. Are you aware that what is recommended in the codes of
practice as well?
A. No, not specifically.

Q. You are not aware of that?
A. No, I mean, for a very practical reason, I am not that
deeply involved in that particular aspect. I know when
I go into an abattoir and see a pig well stunned.

Q. Would you expect your suppliers to comply with those
standards?
A. Yes.

Q. Would you discontinue them if you found out that they were
not?
A. Yes, I think I would.

Q. Dr. Gregory said that the current used at Bowes was .4 of
an amp. Have you ever made enquiries of Bowes about the
current that they use?
A. No, I would not criticise Bowes on anything. He is
absolutely outstanding in his pig husbandry and slaughter
technology. I do not think there is an abattoir in the
country to supersede him.

Q. Do you feel that because that is what it appears to you to
look like when you make visits there? It looks like it is
well-run?
A. I know it is well-run.

Q. I am trying to clarify how you know it was well-run.
A. You know it is well-run based on experience, based on
the whole of the ambience of the place, based on the
attitude of the men who work in it, based on especially the
attitude of Kevin Bowes and his attention to rearing pigs
and Ashley Bowes on his attention to butchering pigs. They
are outstanding men, these two, they are leaders in the
country.

Q. But in terms of -----
A. I would not argue with him what ampage he used. I just
know that it would be right.

Q. You have not checked then?
A. No, I have not checked his ampage.

Q. ADP, Wellingborough supply McKey's, that is right, is it
not?
A. They did.

Q. They did. They do not any more?
A. No.
