Day 213 - 31 01 96 - Page 46

                                                                  DAY 213

                                            SEMIR KHAZNA, Cross-examined:

1 A. I have been doing this in all the time I have been an
     2 Area Manager, yes.
     3
4 Q. So far as you know, that is the way that other Area
5 Managers do it as well?
6 A. Of the ones that I know, some of them do, some do not.
7 It is something that I monitor for my own benefit.
     8
9 Q. So some of them do not monitor it at all?
10 A. They monitor it in a different way. I would just do it
    11 on a weekly.
    12
13 Q. You go on to say: "Recruiting was a problem as the lack of
14 discipline in the store and understaffing meant that people
15 did not want to join or did not stay very long. By
16 contrast, we had no problems recruiting for the nearby
17 Feltham store which opened in 1994". So, these people that
18 you were recruiting for the Feltham store, when they found
19 out they were going to be trained in the Heathrow store,
20 were they all really horrified and refused to go there?
21 A. No, because they were hired from the Feltham Job Centre
22 and Feltham Managers were there to ensure that proper
23 training was given to the Feltham staff.
    24
25 Q. So were they not aware of Heathrow's reputation as a
26 terrible place to work, or were they just not bothered
27 about it because there were Feltham Managers there to look
    28 after them?
    29 A. No.
    30
31 Q. You then go on to say: "In fact, we had to transfer staff
32 from Feltham to Heathrow on a fairly frequent basis to keep
33 the numbers up". Was this at the same time as you were
34 transferring the staff that were being trained in Heathrow
    35 to Feltham?
36 A. After Feltham had opened up and the store settled in,
37 Heathrow continued to run short of staff. We were having
38 to transfer crew from Feltham on a day-to-day basis to help
39 with the operations of the Heathrow restaurant.
    40
    41 Q. When was this?
    42 A. I would say May onwards.
    43
    44 Q. May onwards?
    45 A. For about a month.
    46
    47 Q. For about a month?
    48 A. A month or two, yes.
    49
50 Q. I mean, this is like the odd day per crew member or were
51 crew spending the whole of their fortnightly work periods
52 over at the Heathrow store when really they should have
53 been working at the Feltham store?
54 A. No, these were done on a day-to-day basis. If the
55 store was short on a particular day, Feltham being the
56 nearest restaurant, either through me or through the Store
57 Manager of Feltham, contact would be made for if they can
58 transfer for the day or the evening.
    59
    60 Q. That was a sporadic thing?

                                      46
