same, as good quality as in this store. It is always
immaculately clean from the customer's point of view and
the good value, everything at McDonald's is always a lot
       cheaper."

I am not sure if he can give evidence about outer Mongolia.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.

MR. RAMPTON: That is where he has gone now, I suspect.

MR. MORRIS: I do not think anyone is bothered.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Since you have broken off for the moment
anyway, do you know what ethnic origin Lynval was --
looking at the bottom of page 1?

MR. MORRIS: No idea. But Miss Lamb will be able to -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think it matters, but just in case
there is any argument about it at the end of the case.

MR. MORRIS: I think, from the informal conversation I had with
Miss Lamb, he is West Indian or Afro-Caribbean.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Carry on, then.

MR. MORRIS: To carry on reading: "We are called assistant
managers and store managers, but from a layman's point of
view we are just supervisors. We will just supervise
everything that is going on in the store. While, when it
comes to taking on the responsibility for everything in the
store, we will go down to the supervisor, the equivalent of
an area manager, he will come in, he will see what is good
and what is bad, if we are running at a good profit level
or whatever, he will be able to spot it and he will come
and say to us, 'This is a bit out of control, make sure you
do this, this and this.' The supervisor had got a lot of
control. He is more than manager of the store. Head
Office, they sit on their backsides and just make decisions
and when it comes to actually putting them into practice it
is totally impossible. That is what they get paid for.

"Management get pay rises once a year, depending on how
good you are, a certain percentage of what you are earning,
10 per cent. 8 and a half was what I got last time. The
pay rates have just gone up for management. All of a
sudden I am on £10,450, out of the blue from 8 and a half
grand, which is quite a big step for McDonald's. Crew: get
pay rises or they should get pay rises every 16 weeks, so
that is three pay rises a year. Some people get more. We
have got a few guys here, they can get one a month for
three or four months because they are really doing that
well. That depends on the discretion of the store
manager. A crew member will get a performance review every
eight weeks. One of the managers will sit down with this
particular person and say, 'You are doing this very well,
you are not doing this very well, this is what you have got
to aim for the next 8 weeks.' Then every second month, 16
weeks, they should get a pay rise. It just depends on how
