DAY 217
MRS. HOVI, Examined:
side. All these rooms were virtually uncloseable and were
kept open continuously day and night. My first requirement
when I started working at Jarrets was to keep these doors
closed, and we soon found out that we could not close them
because they had all either fallen off their hinges or were
not operable any more and the sliding doors came. The
question he -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He saw to that?
A. He sorted that out within two days which was amazing,
considering that for three weeks I had been asking for it.
He had -----

MR. MORRIS: Can I just ask you, I am trying to understand the
relationship between you and Mr. Bone. I do not mean how
you got on, I mean, your professional relationship. You
said that he implemented and you had made your judgment on
what should happen?
A. Yes.

Q. So what was his role in relation to you in terms of what we
have been talking about?
A. His role was, as far as I understand it, to implement
the requirements laid down in the regulations. I was there
to see to it that the regulations were adhered to and to
advise Jarrets.

Q. So he was someone who would carry out your ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- instructions?
A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: You could not order him to do things, but if you
raised things and they were not seen to by Jarrets, you
could, if need be, stop the slaughter line?
A. Yes, that is right.

MR. MORRIS: Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So you have no authority over
him ---
A. No.

Q. -- save for the fact that if you, as the official
veterinary surgeon, said that something did not meet proper
procedures and that did not receive a proper response from
Mr. Bone or anyone else, you could, if you thought fit,
say: "Right, no more slaughtering"?
A. That is right.

MR. MORRIS: Right.
A. And, obviously, Mr. Bone had a responsibility towards
Jarrets as well. He would obviously negotiate any changes
or any proposals I would either propose, he would negotiate
them with Jarrets first before he would carry them out. He
was employed by Jarrets.

MR. MORRIS: OK. If you can just carry on. Did you deal with
26?
