                                                                  DAY 217

lot more evidence of the contamination at the abattoirs has
come into light. I am sure you are all aware of the
Government Advisory Committee on Microbiological Food
safety on E.Coli 157, and I am sure that the findings that
were made there further, or I -- in the light of those
findings I find that it is worrying that Mr. Bone still
claims that, for example, when it comes to this hygiene
swabs and the readings that were prevalent at Jarrets in
paragraph 4 of his statement, that he puts so little stress
on them. That particular report puts much bigger emphasis
       on those.

MR. RAMPTON: Can I ask you when this was published?
       A. October. I have it with me, if you -- I can check it.
I think it was in October or November last year. I think
I laid my hands on it in October in a professional
capacity, just having to comment on it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just in case it crops up again, what was it
       called?
       A. It is Advisory -----

  Q. You have it there?
       A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: You have got it?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not want to go into it now because that
will be another two days' evidence, but so that it has been
identified can you say what its title is?
       A. It is a Report on Verocytotoxin-Producing E.Coli, which
is E.Coli 157 as you have learned to know it here, as
       I understand.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. Can you please look in it and say what the
       date of its publication is?
       A. First published 1995, I am afraid.

  Q. That is all it says?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does it have a number?
       A. The H.M.S.O. number is -- I.S.B.N. number -----

  Q. What I suggest you do, when you have finished your evidence
this afternoon, if you kindly just lend it to
       Mrs. Brinley-Codd for ---
       A. Yes, sure.

  Q. -- a couple of minutes so she can take down whatever she
       needs to identify.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you very much. You think it was, at any
rate when you first saw it, in October/November last year?
       A. That is right, yes.

  Q. You would not criticise Mr. Bone for not paying attention
to it if his statement was made in April last year?
       A. All right, I did not know; I did not get Mr. Bone's
       statement until -----
