                                                                  DAY 217

  Q. It has, in fact, only just been signed. I want to ask you
       about this temperature business.

MS. STEEL: Was it that Mr. Bone's statement was written in
       April, or recently?

MR. RAMPTON: No, it was served (inaudible). (To the witness):
Can you get out the smaller scale map that has more on it?
I think, for this purpose, it has everything that I need on
it. First of all, on the left-hand side, beneath "south of
the slaughter hall", there is, what you have told us, a
portakabin containing for the men, the workmen, a mess, a
change room and a toilet, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. That is in the -----
       A. No, it did not contain any toilets or washing rooms.
The washing rooms were in the main building under the vet's
office where they are marked. That mess was only -- the
Portakabin was where the men had their lockers and changed
       their clothes.

  Q. You say there is no shower.
       A. No, the showers are in the so-called changing room,
which was not used as a changing room by others other than
       the boning hall men, staff.

  Q. Did you go into the workman's changing room?
       A. Yes, of course I did; it is part of my duties.

  Q. No showers in there?
       A. No.

  Q. No toilet with a wash trough next door?
       A. No. All the cleaning facilities were in the main
building. The mess that is marked here was just a
       Portakabin with -----

  Q. Are you saying it was not even a two-storey Portakabin,
       with a vet's, hall manager's and a meat inspector's office
       on the first floor?
       A. That part is part of the main building, the vet's
office slaughter hall. It has obviously originally been a
Portakabin, but now made inherenly part of the building
because of the EC regulations, and the facilities
downstairs were -- now it says "changing" and there are
lockers and showers. Those facilities are very small and
       they were only big enough for the men from the boning hall;
they used those. All slaughter men used the mess here
except that separate -- next to the lairage. As I stated
in the morning, they used that for their changing
purposes. So far as having showers, I do not know where
they had them or whether they had them at all. But they
did not have any facility in their changing rooms for
       showers or washing.

  Q. In this bit on the left?
       A. Yes, where it says "mess", separate Portakabin outside.
