                                                                  DAY 217

matter for comment at a later stage if it is a half a
       degree over.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have to sort it out in due course and
decide what is significant and, by the same token, I would
not stop you asking her, but it is not really for her to
say whether she accepts this document or that document, is
it? She can only tell me what her own observations were.

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord, only to this limited extent,
I suppose, that she will, as an intelligent woman, no
doubt, have asked herself whether these documents could be
forgeries. If she has reached a conclusion that they are
not, and Mr. Bone has asserted -------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think it would matter what she
concluded about that because she says she never ever saw
       the documents at the time.

MR. RAMPTON: No, but, my Lord, then if they are not, then
       plainly a solution ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But I cannot accept it from Mrs. Hovi that
       they are not.

MR. RAMPTON: No, but a solution to the conundrum has to be
       found.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: It is possible, as I was going to say, as an
intelligent woman, that she might have thought of one, but
she has not, save in so far as she ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, save in so far as it has been explored
       today. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): Just so that we distinguish in
our minds, Mrs. Hovi, between McKey's specification (which
does not concern you) and science (which does), the
critical temperature is 7 degrees, whatever the
specification may be; is that right?
       A. Well, that has been agreed as ------

  Q. It is the accepted standard?
       A. Yes, that is the accepted standard.

  Q. Is that for all the organisms?
       A. Well, as you remember from the chart that was shown in
the court when I gave my evidence last time, there are
organisms that can grow under 7, and Salmonella is one of
them, but the growth is obviously very slow, and this is
not a scientific -- the 7 is not a scientific standard. It
       is a political standard.

  Q. Is a?
       A. It is a political standard.

  Q. A political standard? You have ......
       A. Well, it is a compromise between ......
