                                                                  Day 236

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there anything more you want to say?

MR. MORRIS: Obviously we are hoping that you decide that he
should not be called this week. If you do decide he should
be called, then we certainly would not want to start our
cross-examination until Friday, so that we have time to
view some of the originals and check all the bundles.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there anything you want to say about
       Mr. Carroll, Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: No, except that on Friday Mr. Carroll has a
personal difficulty, which I would rather not mention in
open court, but it is a matter of some importance to him.
It would be convenient to him if he could leave the court
by the midday on Friday, at the latest. It has to do with
by a member of his family who is in Somerset. It is not an
ordinary family thing by any means at all. If he can get
to that event which I think is on Friday evening, I know he
would be very grateful, which is why originally --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What time is he contemplating leaving?
It may be that if Mr. Carroll is called, personal
convenience will have to be sacrificed, but what is the
latest he could leave on the Friday?

MR. RAMPTON: The latest he could conveniently leave would be at
the midday adjournment. I call it midday: I mean 1
o'clock adjournment on Friday. I will tell your Lordship,
because your Lordship is entitled to know I think. The
witness is asking for the indulgence of the court.
Mr. Carroll has a 30-year old daughter who is Downs
Syndrome child and she lives in sheltered accommodation in
Somerset. It is her 30th birthday, and he has undertaken
to help her organise it. She has asked most people in the
village. That is the reason she has.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is the situation with regard to the
documents which Ms. Steel you said she would like to
       inspect?

MR. RAMPTON: Can I make a preliminary remark about that? True
it is that a lot of documents have Mr. Carroll's name on
them. That is simply because he, as Head of Security, is
where they sent when they are received in different parts
of the country. There is no magic in that. So far as
I know, so far as any -- I say another preliminary thing,
so far as the documents relating to the 16th October 1989
are concerned, those documents have now been identified and
found; the originals. One has a handwritten date on it,
written by Mrs. Brinley-Codd which is back at Barlows and
can be seen at once. She has another one of the documents
from that occasion here in court which she can easily show.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There may be some confusion. There are a
number of documents, TEC 1, 2, 3 and 4 or whatever, which
are referred to in Mr. Carroll's statements. Are they
