                                                                  Day 236

                                        TERENCE EDMUND CARROLL - EXAMINED

1 "At about 3.30 pm, 6 people met outside East Finchley
2 Underground Station. Between then and 4 o'clock the group
3 raised to about 15 young people. Their ring leader
4 appeared to be Paul Gravett whose name and identity I knew
5 at that time and Mr. Gravett was accompanied by Helen Steel
6 whose identity was also known to me at that time."
     7 A. That is correct.
     8
9 Q. Had you identified Ms. Steel by means of description or by
10 photograph or both; do you remember?
    11 A. By description.
    12
13 Q. Then if you turn to the next page, paragraph 13:
    14
15 "During the course of the afternoon, I observed Helen Steel
16 distributing the leaflet complained of to members of the
    17 public."
    18
19 Are you sure of that?
    20 A. Yes.
    21
    22 Q. Can I show you a document, please.
    23
24 My Lord, I observe for the court record that it has a
25 coffee stain over the front of the face of Ronald McDonald
26 which it did not have at the time. That was acquired later
27 on in its life. (Handed) Just open it up. Do you
    28 recognise that document?
    29 A. I do.
    30
    31 Q. What is it?
32 A. It is a publication from London Greenpeace.
    33
34 Q. I know that but can I ask you, perhaps my question was a
35 bad one, when did you first see that document?
    36 A. I first saw it probably in about 1985 or 1986.
    37
38 Q. Did you see that document on 16th October 1989?
    39 A. I did.
    40
41 Q. Those are the words complained of in this action, yes?
    42 A. Correct.
    43
44 Q. You are aware of that. Is that the document you saw Ms.
45 Steel distributing to members of the public?
46 A. That or similar to it.
    47
48 Q. I was going to ask you, do you remember how many copies of
49 that document came into the possession of you on behalf of
    50 McDonald's on that occasion?
51 A. There were quite a considerable number. I would not
52 like to put a figure on it. I should think they ran into
    53 double figures.
    54
55 Q. How were those documents or those, I do not like to call
56 them copies because it is muddlesome, but how were those
57 documents that were collected on behalf of McDonald's on
58 that occasion, or obtained on behalf of McDonald's on that
    59 occasion?
60 A. Normally speaking by members of the staff, my Lord, who

                                      41
