Day 237 - 18 04 96 - Page 8

1 against people involved with London Greenpeace?
2 A. I was involved in discussions on two or three
3 occasions, but the decision was not mine, and it was really
4 just to, I think, add a point of view.
     5
6 Q. Who else was involved in these discussions?
7 A. Certainly Mr. Nicholson was and our lawyers.
     8
     9 Q. Who else?
10 A. The senior officers of the Company would have been
11 involved, but I was not.
    12
    13 Q. Mr. Preston?
14 A. But I was not privy to those meetings.
    15
    16 Q. Mr. Preston?
17 A. Yes, Mr. Preston would have been.
    18
19 Q. Were the meetings that you were at which senior officers of
    20 the Company were present?
21 A. I do not think I was at a meeting with Mr. Preston when
22 we were discussing this matter; that was Mr. Nicholson's
    23 prerogative.
    24
25 Q. Which senior officers were present at the meetings where
    26 you were?
27 A. Mr. Nicholson and the Company solicitors.
    28
29 Q. The Company solicitors -- are you talking about Barlow Lyde
    30 & Gilbert?
    31 A. Correct.
    32
33 Q. They are not senior officers, are they?
34 A. No, but I did not say they were.
    35
36 Q. So when you said "senior officers", the only person you are
37 referring to is Mr. Nicholson?
    38 A. Yes.
    39
40 Q. What steps were decided to be taken -----
    41
42 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to ask when the meetings were?
    43
44 MS. STEEL: Yes, sorry. (To the witness): When were the
45 meetings that you were involved in?
46 A. They would have been about the time of the service of
47 the writs and shortly afterwards, when the case was being
    48 formulated.
    49
50 Q. So that was the earliest meetings that you went to?
51 A. As far as I recall, yes.
    52
53 Q. Were you party to the decision to hire private detectives
    54 or inquiry agents?
    55 A. No.
    56
57 Q. You were not party to that?
    58 A. No.
    59
60 Q. When did you first become aware that inquiry agents had

                                      8
