Day 237 - 18 04 96 - Page 28
which I gave a little while ago, I read quite carefully,
because one did not have to be a genius to realise that an
issue like this might arise when we went through it
yesterday, and you must not ask any questions about gaps in
that document.

MS. STEEL: Can I just say, because I think it is important to
put the entire argument, that Mr. Carroll is saying that
the only people whose identities he knew was myself and Mr.
Gravett. If what is written there is about Mr. Gravett,
that is no problem, I will not ask any more about what was
there, but could Mr. Rampton confirm that it is about Mr.
Gravett and not about, for example, Mr. Clarke, or somebody
else?

MR. RAMPTON: If it has to do with Mr. Clarke, it would be
irrelevant anyway. The fact it has to do with Mr. Gravett
and it has to do with an aspect of Mr. Gravett's
activities, if Mr. Gravett is relevant at all, which he may
or may not be, an aspect of Mr. Gravett's biography, if you
like, which is completely irrelevant to any issue in this
case.

MS. STEEL: Thank you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I was going to say we have had thousands of
issues on points of detail of admissibility -- that may be
an exaggeration -- but it is not an exaggeration to say we
have had hundreds, and I have to rule on them as they come
up. As you know and as 99 per cent of the time you have
very fairly followed, you just must observe the rulings
which I gave.

MS. STEEL: Yes. I mean, can I just point out that when we had
the blanked out nutrition memo, we were allowed to ask the
witness about what was in the document when the witness was
in the witness box. It turned out that it was relevant and
it was disclosed. So ---

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do not agree with that at all.

MS. STEEL: -- I assume -----

MR. RAMPTON: I do not agree with that. I am sorry.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It was not conceded that it was relevant.
Mr. Rampton said (and I have got no reason to doubt) that
to bring an end to the repeated arguments about whether it
should be disclosed or not, he would just disclose it
anyway.

MS. STEEL: I mean, the main point is that we were allowed to
ask about what was in that document.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but they are all separate documents, and
I have to judge these matters on the particular
circumstances in relation to each. You must observe my
ruling, just as Mr. Rampton has to.

MS. STEEL: Your statement was, in fact, prepared from this
