Day 237 - 18 04 96 - Page 32

       A. I am not Mr. Nicholson. Mr. Nicholson has the privy to
that particular knowledge; I have not.

  Q. So Mr. Nicholson kept you in the dark, did he, about what
       he was doing?
       A. No, he did not.

  Q. He had a good working relationship?
       A. Yes, we did.

  Q. You used to chat with him about all kinds of things to do
       with the job?
       A. Yes, yes, cricket, football -- everything.

  Q. To do with the job?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Are you saying that he did not tell you that he was
instructing inquiry agents at that time?
       A. At that time I did not know.

  Q. You did not know?
       A. Not as far as I remember.

  Q. That must be something -----
       A. You are talking about something which happened nearly
seven years ago. A lot of water has gone under the bridge
       since then.

  Q. That is true, but you have come into the witness box to
tell us about what was happening -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You must put what you are getting at here
because otherwise I do not know. If what you are
suggesting is you did not follow that up because
Mr. Nicholson told you that he was going to instruct
inquiry agents, then put it to the witness, otherwise I do
not know whether I should be making a note of this or not
bothering, what its relevance is. It is not just a battle
of wits with the witness; it is an attempt to produce
       something useful in the case.

MR. MORRIS: You did not need to identify the people in due
course because you already knew who you thought were the
       key people involved?
       A. Not really, no.

  Q. You had -----
       A. I did not bother,.

  Q. You had someone from the ARNI on the picket with you
       pointing out people to you?
       A. He pointed out two people to me, Mr. Gravett and
Ms. Steel, as far as I remember. He did not point out
anybody else to me. I did not think it was relevant or
necessary to identify anybody else there.

  Q. You did not think it was necessary to identify anyone else
there, but you wrote that in your memo that you were going
       to do that?
