Day 237 - 18 04 96 - Page 36

  Q. In the same way were you actually given the address?
       A. No.

  Q. You were not. Can I just ask, I am a little bit worried
about, thinking back about it, what Mr. Carroll said about
       what ARNIs were.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: What?

  MS. STEEL: What ARNIs were.

  THE WITNESS: Animal Rights ------

MS. STEEL: Whether it was -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not going to draw any inference that you
have been involved in any activity which might be unlawful
from anything which I have heard this morning ---

  MS. STEEL: Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- to do with Animal Rights activities of any
kind. You need not think that the mention of that and, to
be more precise anyway, you need not think that the mention
of that unit and his understanding of what they did will
reflect adversely on you in my mind.

MS. STEEL: But just, I mean, I did say that, as far as
I understand it, that is not the nature of the
       organisation.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I did, I made a note that Mr. Carroll
said: "It is a branch of the Police dealing with animal
liberation front anti-terrorist groups". I do not pretend
to have it word perfect. Then I have put in brackets:
"(HS says they observe all animal rights protesters and
       activities, not just anti-terrorist)".

  MS. STEEL: Yes, thank you.

MR. MORRIS: If I can say, for the record, it is in my belief,
not being an animal rights activist myself, that in
thousands of actions by the Animal Liberation Front no
animal or human has ever been injured.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, we simply cannot have that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is pointless saying that.

MR. MORRIS: Because it has been described as "anti-terrorist"
there is nothing terroristic that needs to be -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Really, I have said what I have said to
reassure Ms. Steel about something she is anxious about.
Just let us leave it there.

MR. MORRIS: Right. Unlike, of course, all the millions of
animals that are tortured every day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, no, Mr. Morris. You have done pretty
