THE WITNESS: Shall I go down, your Lordship?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think so, Mr. Carroll, please.

MS. STEEL: I am going to fast forward it while it is on the
screen because I am not 100 per cent sure where this is.

                           (Video film played)

  Q. Is it on the right channel, do you know?

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes, it is.

(Video film continued to be played)

MS. STEEL: That voice that we hear there, is that your voice?
       A. I could not tell you.

  Q. I do not know whether the witness can go a bit closer?
       A. I do not know whether it will make any difference. I
just did not recognize my voice particularly there. I can
hear what is being said. I just do not recognize it as
       being me.

  Q. Did you hear that?
       A. I did, but I did not recognize it as me. It could be,
       but not for -----

  Q. It was talking about somebody sitting on a wall and said:
"It is probably the fucking undercover lady". Do you
       remember saying that?
       A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that what was said?

MS. STEEL: You can actually hear it. This is not very good,
kind of, hearing it, but I listened to it very carefully
and that is what was said.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Did you recognize that as what was said?
       A. I certainly did not, my Lord.

MS. STEEL: I mean, I do not know whether it might help if the
volume was turned down a bit and Mr. Carroll stood nearer,
because when it is loud it gets really distorted.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will have to see, if it matters at the end
of the day, whether we can get a clear reading, for want of
a better word, which the parties are prepared to agree as
to what was actually said. But, at the moment you have
Mr. Carroll giving evidence and -----

MS. STEEL: The point is that it sounds very like Mr. Carroll's
       voice to me.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You must not say that. If it is important in
due course, you can give evidence about it.
