I am not a vegetarian. I do however feel strongly about the rights and protection of animals, especially companion animal overpopulation. Vegitarianism and animal rights do go hand in hand as far as food consumation goes but after that the two separate. We don't eat dog or cat here in the US so there is no vegie/activist conflict there. We do however, put hundreds of thousands of domestic animals to sleep every year. Pittsburg alone is averaging 25,000 animals put to sleep. One city out of one state out of one country. Put your activist/vegie differences aside and concider the wasted life. If we band together (like that'll happen) and get our government to create laws that 1)severly limit commercial breeding of any kind (what a hit in the old money belt that would be)and stop private breeding, 2) stop the bottleneck of high cost spayings and neuterings (vets have to make a living too and therefore have to charge to repay their medical school bills but spaying and neutering should not be part of that cost), not allow stray animals to remain free without being neutered. These efforts can curtail the horrendous reputations humane societies have, can limit animals without hurting or killing, will cut down the ready population of companion animals to the point where there won't be so many and we will have to appreciate the ones that we do have. Not eating animals is a worthy cause but there is still death going on in huge numbers. Take your committment of animal rights to a new level and write the government to put controls into place. Write your humane society to show your loyalty to the animals they struggle to place in homes. Get involved. Get your friends to write. We have to try!!! Slowing birthrates is a much happier solution than euthanisia, don't you think, you vegies and you meaties? Luv ya all and thanks for reading. In memory of Traveler...
