you can't just grow vegetables(some moron just posted that)it would deplete the topsoil at a rate twice as fast as we are depleting it now...

I don't know if anyone is reading this at this point in time. but I would like to tell whomever wrote the above line that you are absolutely ignorant and should really refrain from expressing your opinions until you have even some idea of what you are talking about.

If absolutely everyone in the USofA (or even the world for that matter) switched to vegetarianism tomorrow and just "grew veggies" it would actually lessen the burden that modern farming places on the soil. This may not make sense at first, but if you consider that such a change in american eating habits would bring the meat industry to a grinding halt, then you might begin to understand how it works.
The massive american meat industry raises millions of cattle a year which they have to have to grow crops to feed. by the time a cow has been raised to a proper slaughtering age, it has eaten about fifteen times the amount of food that it will actually produce as a whole in meat products. Therefore, a single pound of beef = 15 pounds of grains and vegetables. So if everyone stopped eating beef, the farming byrden on the soil could possibly drop to a fifteenth of what it is today.
If you grasp this simple point, you may begin to understand how vegetarianism is not only good for your body, but could also be an answer to world hunger and could go a long way to lowering the cost of food in this country.
