: :...If some kid is going to go into 'ethnic studies', then he will learn soon enough that he has knowledge that is, for all intents and purposes, useless.

:
: See...this is the problem. To you, this is simply the natural 'way things work'. The market assigns all value. Supply and demand. If there's no money in it - it's useless.

: But the "marketplace" is stacked. A great deal of effort and expense is devoted to creating 'needs' and desires in a public to consume products. In order to consume these products the public must work in some capacity in those industries that create and promote them. This motivational aspect of capitalism represents a large and vital sector. For my money it is worse than useless as it thrives on engendering commodity fetishes while at the same time discouraging critical thinking.

Sure sure sure, and making a bunch of mind numbed robots with their heads full of mush believe that taking a degree in ethnic studies is not creating a need in the marketplace of academe. DUH.

: If usefulness is equated with remuneration I guess one of the most useless groups of people are the farm laborers who pick our crops. Or all those relatively useless minimum wage workers.

Nope, renumeration is based on supply and demand. A lot more people can pick legumes than can perform brain surgery.

: (Let alone McSpotlight! Rex must be Worse than useless!;)
