1st post: I want to know what diseases were cured by animal testing.
2nd post: I would imagine the polio vaccine was first tested on animals. Also, cancer drugs and AIDS drugs that are trying to be developed are being tested on animals, and eventually there will be a cure for both.
RESPONSE to the above:
No human diseases have irrefutably been cured through animal testing. That will seem outrageous to you as it did to me in the past as a biology student. Below is just a tiny tidbit of information. For detailed information, see Guardians www.werple.net.au/~antiviv and CAFMR www.pnc.com.au/~cafmr
below is an exerpt from the article "cancer research - a super fraud?" Anyone who thinks there will "eventually" be a cure for cancer from present research methods should read this article for an education - along with others on the web-site www.werple.net.au/~antiviv
"cancer research - a super fraud?" is posted on this multinationals debating page a little bit down the main page from this post.
.... The Orthodox “War on Cancer” has failed. “My overall assessment is that the national cancer programme must be judged a qualified failure” Dr. John Bailer, who spent 20 years on the staff of the U.S. National Cancer Institute and was editor of its journal. (3) Dr. Bailer also says: “The five year survival statistics of the American Cancer Society are very misleading. They now count things that are not cancer, and, because we are able to diagnose at an earlier stage of the disease, patients falsely appear to live longer. Our whole cancer research in the past 20 years has been a total failure. More people over 30 are dying from cancer than ever before . . . More women with mild or benign diseases are being included in statistics and reported as being ‘cured’. When government officials point to survival figures and say they are winning the war against cancer they are using those survival rates improperly.”
AND, particularly in regard to animal research:
“.....Dr. Irwin Bross, former director of the Sloan-Kettering, the largest cancer research institute in the world, and then Director of Biostatistics at Roswell Park Memorial Institute for Cancer Research, Bufallo, NY: “The uselessness of most of the animal model studies is less well known. For example, the discovery of chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of human cancer is widely-heralded as a triumph due to use of animal model systems. However, here again, these exaggerated claims are coming from or are endorsed by the same people who get the federal dollars for animal research. There is little, if any, factual evidence that would support these claims. Indeed, while conflicting animal results have often delayed and hampered advances in the war on cancer, they have never produced a single substantial advance either in the prevention or treatment of human cancer. For instance, practically all of the chemotherapeutic agents which are of value in the treatment of human cancer were found in a clinical context rather than in animal studies.” (10)
furthermore, 80-90% of Cancer is preventable... see the article!
Technically, vaccines are not cures. They're a preventative method. However, there is much information, if you dig for it, showing that the role of vaccination in the decline of infectious disease is at best grossly overstated and most likely not much of a role at all. You'll find info. care-of the CAFMR web-site: www.pnc.com.au/~cafmr
The paragrpah below is an exceprt from an article titled:
"Measles Vaccination - some myths examined"
1. “Did vaccination cause the decline of infectious disease?”
Numerous scholars have demonstrated, using government statistics, that the decline of infectious disease and infant mortality in the industrialised countries began many decades before mass-vaccination. For instance, in Australia, “almost 80 per cent of the reduction in infant mortality between the 1880s and the 1970s occurred prior to the 1930s.” ( Dr. R. Taylor, Medicine out of Control, 1979: p.9). Extensive vaccination did not begin in Australia until the mid-1930s and for some diseases did not commence until the 1960s and later. The decline of infectious disease was due to improvements in hygiene, nutrition, housing, and general living conditions. Figure 1 shows that most of the decline in measles deaths in Australia occurred before vaccination was introduced.
Insulin is not a cure for diabetes - it merely alleviates some symptoms. Diabetes is more common now than it was when insulin was first discovered. Insulin is also a highly overused and abused drug and has damaged (eventually killed) a lot of people who shouldn't have been put on it in the first place. Most diabetes CAN be dealt with without insulin - you will find informaiton on this if you search for it. But you won’t get it from your local drug company saleperson - your local doctor. In any case, insulin was not discovered through animal research as commonly believed. You can read more about this in a post of mine on this debating page a little bit down the main post page.
Approx. 90-95% of heart disease is due to lifestyle factors and therefore preventable. Transplants are not a "cure". If the patient doesn't die as a direct result of the operation they are likely to die fairly soon (within a few years) as a result of the associated complications - such as infections/chemical damage due to the suppression of their immune system from immune-suppressing drugs/excessive antibiotics etc. (used to prevent organ rejection).
The American Heart Association has a flyer called "Position of the A.H.A. on research animal use" that lists 42 medical advances supposedly due to animal research.
However, a 30-page booklet titled "Cardiac Arrest" published by CIVITAS (box 26 Swain, New York 14884-0026) goes through each of these and refutes them one by one. These advances were made through study of humans, not animals. In many cases, reliance on animal research delayed advances in human medicine for many decades. This booklet only costs $3 U.S.

Again, I can only put so much info. here. It is a waste of my time and energy to put up more. To comprehensively refute establishment dogmas that people religisouly accept requires a large treatise. Much of this information is available on the above-mentioned web-sites or in books available from them.
PS - Don't ever rely on an "animal rights" organisations for such info. Many of them are infiltrated with Pharmaceutical-vivisection lobby stooges who filter the information made avilable to members & public.
