: You're welcome to tuck me in, but remember it's potentially dangerous. Someone might accuse you of being in bed with the liberals.

: : I would assume that you are not only an english professor; but a whiner who talks in grandiose terms about the welfare of the world with no specifics except the occasional appeal to a heart string.

: That would be two more incorrect assumptions that you have. If being
: able to put a period at the end of a sentence qualifies one as an
: English professor, then I'll be sending out resumes. And I've been
: quite specific about the predatory characteristics of capitalism. You,
: on the other hand, can only offer absurdities about having your spirit
: uplifted by grasping for dollars.

Once again you have perverted a statement by referencing your own ignorant assumptions about motive. It is not just about dollars teddy, I have been quite clear about that. It is too bad that your only knee jerk reaction to someone celebrating a system that rewards personal and team achievement, is to wipe your ignorant brush over the canvas and say they are only motivated by money. If that is true, then your own arguments and ideals must be fed from the same ignorance....I am sorry that the lack of a period on the end of my sentence is a cause of irritation, yet I suppose in your society of equality, there will be some large organization that is responsible for equality of grammar (look ma, no period)

: : There is no common sense in the notion that I should subsidize your lifestyle simply because I choose to work harder and are more successful than you.

: I'm duly impressed with your hard work and success, but apparently you
: aren't mature enough to realize it could end at any time. What you
: call a lifestyle subsidy is actually a premium on an insurance policy
: that you may have to collect on someday. Your hard-workin', successful
: colleagues in the private sector won't be there to bail you out.

Unlike you teddy bear, I am not, nor do I rely on others to subsidize my lifestyle. I simply work hard, live within my means, and save and invest a substantial portion of my earnings. If the bubble bursts wise guy, I get off my ass, asses my talents and skills and incorporate this into a plan to get back on my feet. I do not, expect to use your money to sit on my ass for a year and find my self.....unfortunately, and lucky for you, I take responsibility for myself.

: : It is not about amassing wealth, you armchair democrat, it is about having the ability to develop my talents, invest my time and energy into developing the team I work worth, achieve a goal, and reap the benefits...

: It's not just a job, it's an adventure. You may take pleasure from
: exercising authority over the "team", but most people have to work at
: unsatisfying jobs just to put food on the table. Unlike you, they
: don't work to feed their ravenous egos.

If working hard to find something that you can enjoy is satisfying a ravenous ego, then you have a real point. It is too bad that sad people like yourself would only assume that someone who works on a team in a business is only in it for personal gain and self promotion. It sounds like you should sit down and watch another episode of melrose place, or la law to continue to develop your understanding of the world. Unlike your cynical bark, some people actually work as a team. I do not exercise power over anyone, they are all talented individuals who have the option of going elsewhere based on thier skills and accomplishments....most of them are there because they are challenged by the goal we are trying to achieve.....and guess what teddy, it is not all about money.....must just hurt to have your whole, immature, and idealistic ideology challenged in such a way.....sounds like you have only been exposed to the guy who sits in a corner and bitches about his boss because of the position he is on, that often is a result of poor choices, or living beyond his means....as far as I am concerned...too bad.

: : The problem with your argument is that you think all those that are unfortunate are there because they are purely victims of this beast you despise....guess what ted, a lot of people are not interested in working for anything, and they beleive that society owes them a debt, as shocked as it may be for you to hear that....there are just as many as them as there are those you speak of who are duly oppresed.....

: I'm shocked to hear that. You must have conducted extensive field research to reach that conclusion. That's the best you can do--stereotypes about lazy people who want a handout?
: There are not enough jobs available for people who want to work, as
: shocked as you may be to hear that. Of those jobs that are available,
: many of them do not pay a living wage, as shocked as you may be to hear
: that also.

Guess what ted...nobody has control over this. It is certainly not my fault that the world econony has forced open competition on a global scale....as you may be shocked to hear. Or that because of the policies and wealth of the united states for the past twenty years, that a majority of people in the united states enjoyed high wages and living standards, with relative low skill levels, simply because they had the benefit of living in the richest country on earth.....so guess what happens? When the economy opens up, and all those people have to face competition from agressive individuals in other countries who have better education , and an increased drive to succeed....you get the panic from all the americans in the middle who have spent the last twenty years building up expectations for the kind of lifestyle they deserve.....those of us who have seen that have planned, by saving, by going to school, by reading the newspaper, by trying different jobs and lowering my expectations in the short term of what I expect.....I work for a goal now ted....the rest of the world does not give a shit what the average american, who they perceive has had it very good, for very long, thinks they deserve or not......get with the program. If you do not think that a socialist, convergence attitude is not a response to this harsh reality of the global economy, then you better reevaluate your perspective on current events. And in terms of no jobs....bull...the kinds of jobs are changing, the skills to succeed are different, the game has changed. IF you do not adapt you will be left behind....I owe you an explanation of why this is happening, but if you choose to do nothing about it, then goodbye to you.

:
: : Then get off your ass and change it ted. It is not a sports analogy, yet I would imagine it would seem terrible to someone who just wants to take what other people have anyway.....if you are unhappy where you are, begin once a week to develop your options, it will take time and energy....so maybe a check from the government, or feeling self righteouss is less time consuming and still feeds your ego..

: Judging from the number and length of your posts, you're on your ass
: more than I am. Not everyone who is opposed to capitalism wants a
: check from the government. It's easy for those of you who are happy
: with the entrenched elites to lecture the rest of us on working to change the system. You only have to keep going to work and coming home,
: and the powers that be will take care of things for you.

Guess what, average guy ted, average apartment, above average ability to type....other than that, just a regular guy...not entrenched with no elites, nothing....so get the segment correct.

: : vote with your dollar ted, call a politician, run for community council.....did you even vote? The trouble is too many people like you who do not know enough about the system choses only to glob onto large, generic and tired ideals to keep yourself going...

: Sartre once called elections "a trap for fools". We don't have a two-party system here in America. We have one big party for capitalism. Which is why people like yourself are so enamored of it.
: I voted and campaigned and signed petitions for about ten years. Now
: I know better. You'll be happy to know I still contribute to leftist
: organizations, and boycott atrocities like McDonalds.

That is your right, I can respect that. Sounds like you are just another cynic to me.

: :...sorry buddy, but this is real life and nobody gets a free ride...the world is opening up, and all you are talking about is to live in a happy global village....may sound nice, but not for a hundred years will we see the socialism you espouse.

: For someone who's not worried about it, you sure do argue strenuously
: against it.

Just don't enjoy the ignorance of it all.

: : You do not even know what a CEO does, other than you very generic and cynical understanding.....it only fuels the fire of your own ignorance....if you knew who the real world worked you would be insulted by your own lack of objectivity or understanding...

: Well, that's a tad overblown, but I'm disappointed that you didn't take
: the opportunity to explain this creature, the CEO, to me. Apparently
: fifteen years of observing them has failed to endow me with understanding, unlike yourself. What do they do, besides deciding the
: fate of others based on profit and loss statements? What do they do,
: besides taking the lion's share of their employees' production and
: buying a summer home with it? How do they arrive at their conclusions,
: such as UPS deciding that a billion dollars in profit wasn't enough to
: justify 10,000 new full-time jobs?

: What kind of mad geniuses are they?

The UPS situation is slightly overblown, I think you may do better to read up on the situation. It had less to do with part time employement, which has not been on the rise in the US, contrary to popular ignorance, and hinged more on the pension side of the part time game.....I would suggest that the teamsters are the most unlikely candidate to get any praise period. Carey and Hoffa are clever politicians and were in the midst of a fight for the leadership of the teamsters at the time the UPS strike began....hmmm.....naw, probably all about idealism.

As for the Mad Genius of the CEO, you get good ones and bad ones ted, like anything in life. To wipe your brush across the lot and you gripe to yourself and sign another check to your leftist group...how about simply giving the money to the kid on the street who is begging downtown in his two hundred dollar shoes, fifty dollar pants, one hundred dollar earings in his nose, and glazed eyes....you should be more worried about the youth in this country that the overal idealism you espouse.....live it.
