Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 32
1 MS. STEEL: I think he has agreed that one, has he not?
A. No. What I have said is that with sodium and fibre,
2 in general, the concentration in McDonald's foods are
about the same as in a typical British diet.
3
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right.
4 A. As far as the fat and saturated fat is concerned, if
we took, say, a cheeseburger and french fries and a shake,
5 then again I am pretty sure that the concentration of fat
and saturated fat would be higher than the dietary
6 recommendations. What we have to bear in mind ----
7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You do not need to go over that again. I
have that.
8 A. I think it is important to understand that at the
present time in this country there is quite a difference
9 between the average diet and the recommendation which we
are trying to achieve.
10
Q. Yes.
11
MS. STEEL: Can I just clarify what you said about sugar? Do
12 you agree that the meal example I gave you would be likely
to have a fairly high sugar content?
13 A. I would need to look at that because there would be a
high sugar in the shakes but not in the other ones. So
14 how it would work out as far as the total meal is
concerned, without doing the calculations, I could not
15 tell you.
16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am only trying to shorten it because we
have quite a lot of detailed figures on which you will be
17 able to do some work, if you like, and we are now talking
in general terms, which may not be as helpful at the end
18 of the day.
19 MS. STEEL: All right. I read this out to you before, but you
were talking in your statement about governments and other
20 organisations, if they are going to make recommendations
to the general public they have a responsibility to be
21 very careful?
A. Can you give me a page reference, please?
22
Q. I do not think you need to look at it. We went over it
23 before. Do you think that if people are making
recommendations they should put over the whole picture so
24 that people can make their own minds up?
A. Yes, that is fair comment.
25
Q. Right. I think you said, repeatedly, that people choose
26 for themselves what they want to eat?
A. Yes.
27
Q. You have also said that they need to be in possession of
28 the facts about any one food and its place in the diet?
A. Yes.
29
Q. To make an informed choice they need to be aware of the
30 consequences of eating a particular type of diet, do they
not?
