  Q. If the Humane Slaughter Association made recommendations,
you would not automatically ensure that all your suppliers
       were in compliance with those?
       A. I see, that is funny how we are on different nets. If
the Humane Society said that, yes, I would automatically
recommend it to any of my suppliers and encourage them to
do it. When you asked me, as you did, does it affect my
business, of course, being a commercial man, I immediately
thought of pounds shillings and pence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does it make or more or less profitable?
       A. Yes, sir, and it does not.

MS. STEEL: Can I just ask, when you were giving
evidence-in-chief you said that you support the audits
which the Humane Society carries out. What audits are
       they?
       A. They visit abattoirs.

  Q. What, your suppliers?
       A. All abattoirs. Many, many abattoirs are members of
it. We encourage our suppliers to be members of it. We
cannot make them members of it but we encourage them.

  Q. Would you get the report on what the Humane Slaughter
       Association thinks of -----
       A. Not specifically, no. There is an annual report.

  Q. Right.
       A. You see, you cannot presuppose that all slaughtermen
are cruel. My experience is that most slaughtermen are
kind. Any man who will get out of bed in the middle of the
night to put a sick animal out of its pain or trouble, is
not a cruel man. I have known examples of that.

  Q. Do you know what the minimum current is that the Humane
Slaughter Association recommends for the stunning of pigs?
       A. No.

  Q. Could you turn to Defendants' documents No. 101?
       A. In this file?

  Q. No, it will be in one of the blue files on the top row.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 101, it is one of your original lists, not
       supplementary list.

MS. STEEL: It is the original list.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is No. III?
       A. Bundle III, documents 60 to 112.

MS. STEEL: If you could turn to 101, please. Is this the type
of Newsletter you would get sent as a member?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If you turn to the second page, in the paragraph about
electrical stunning, about midway through there, it says:
"Scientific recommendations for minimum current levels
