Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 43

       and visited Caledonian Road?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So I assume it was after October 1987, but is that right or
       not?
       A. That is right, my Lord, yes.

MS. STEEL: It would have been before October 1988?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So, it was after October '87 and before
       October '88?
       A. Yes. In order to be able to say what I said in
paragraph 5 I had taken counsel's advice on the position of
an organisation like Greenpeace London, or
London Greenpeace, and because of the advice I had been
given I decided to make a visit to 5 Caledonian Road myself
to see whether I could learn anything there.

MS. STEEL: Just to clarify something, you said you were
conscious of London Greenpeace in 1984?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Was it you who instructed the solicitors to write to
       London Greenpeace on that occasion?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Did you follow up what had happened with that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What were you told?
       A. There has been no reply.

  Q. Did you suggest to them that they should write again in
case the letter had not been received, it had been lost in
       the post?
       A. No, not on that occasion; not at that time, not way
       back in 1984.

  Q. Right. So the next kind of investigation or steps that you
took that related to anything to do with London Greenpeace
       would have been in 1987?
       A. Yes.

  Q. OK. How did you know what the nature of London Greenpeace
       was?
       A. When?

  Q. You said that you had taken counsel's advice on the
position of an organisation like London Greenpeace. How
did you know what kind of an organisation it was?
       A. I had probably received some of your literature. There
is another organisation that we subscribe to who were doing
other work for me, and in the course of that work they had
come across some of your literature.

  Q. Who is that organisation?
       A. Well, they used to be called the Economic League. I do
not know what they are called now and I am not sure whether
we are still subscribing to them.
