Mr McDonald Bites Back

The Independent, 30th September 1996; UK

A retired teacher called Ronald McDonald is threatening to take the hamburger company McDonald's to court, saying the use of the name Ronald McDonald for the clown's mascot is an "insult" to the Scottish clan system.

Mr McDonald, 61, from Aberdeen, said he was moved to write to the company after reading of its attempts to stop a sandwich shop using the name McMunchies. He said he would consider legal action if he did not get a satisfactory answer.

A spokeswoman for McDonald's said Mr McDonald had misunderstood why the company had targeted McMunchies. The company had acted because customers could be confused into thinking there was an association with McDonald's.
