Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 28

     1 A. Yes, I agree.

2 Q. I think part of this is -- I will just read out one
paragraph, but I am getting confused as to what is still
3 in issue and what is not: "Fats that are hard contain the
most saturates. It is these that increase the level of
4 cholesterol in the blood raising the risk of heart
disease". Is that something you would agree with?
     5 A. Yes.

6 Q. "How to eat less fat" in the next column: "Beware of
invisible fats in foods like biscuits, cakes, chocolate,
7 pastry, and savoury snacks. Check labels". Then at the
end of that column it says: "There is nothing wrong with
8 an occasional high fat meal." Is that something you
would agree with, that there is nothing wrong with an
     9 occasional high fat meal?
              A. Absolutely.
    10
         Q. But that it is not a good idea to eat high fat meals very
    11 often?
              A. Well, clearly the more high fat meals you eat the more
12 care you have to take to ensure that your total diet meets
              the recommendations.
    13
         Q. So would you agree that it is not a good idea to eat high
    14 fat meals very often?
              A. Yes. It depends what you mean by "very often".
15 Obviously if you are eating a high fat meal every day,
then it is going to be -- you would have to be careful
16 with the rest of your diet.

17 Q. Every day. What about every two days?
              A. Well, you know, at the end of the day it becomes a
18 question of semantics, does it not? It is really up to
each individual to be aware of the guidelines, to
19 understand where there may be sources of fat and saturated
fat and sugar are in the diet, so they can make the right
20 choices in order to produce a diet which meets the
              recommendations in a total diet.
    21
         Q. But as a nutritionist, would you say it is not a good idea
22 to eat high fat meals every other day or every three days,
              or what?
23 A. I do not think one could come up with hard and fast
rules like that, to be quite frank.
    24
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me put it another way. If an adult
25 member of your family said, "what should I restrict my
frequency of high fat meals to", what would be the answer
26 you would come up with, off the top of your head, without
getting too technical and having reservations about it
27 depends what else you read? What would be your first
answer? Sitting in your armchair, what would be your
28 answer? It might just give an impression, you see.
              A. Once a day.
    29
MR. MORRIS: Sorry, was there an answer?
    30
         MR. RAMPTON: Once a day.
