Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 29

     1
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Once a day, was the answer.
     2
MS. STEEL: I thought you just said it was not wise to eat it
     3 once a day?
              A. I do not recall.
     4
         Q. You do not remember?
     5
MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, unfortunately we do not have the
6 screens. My recollection is he said, as he has so often
before, "It depends what else you eat". The more high fat
7 meals you have, the more careful you have to be.
              A. With all due respect, my Lord, you did push me into a
8 corner. We have to be careful. It depends on what we
mean by "a high fat meal". Believe you me, there are big
9 differences in high fat meals. You could have one that
is, 40 per cent of calories is fat; you could have one
10 that is 60 per cent of calories as fat. So I think you
have to accept that, ultimately, there have to be some
    11 reservations.

12 MS. STEEL: Just going on, in that case, about sugar on the
next page. This has come up a couple of times about the
13 role of sugar in the diet. It says here in the second
column: "Except during strenuous exercise, sugar is no
14 better for giving energy than the same amount of calories
from other food". So if you are in need of energy, it is
15 quite possible to eat other more healthy foods and get the
              energy you are after?
16 A. Well, it is possible to eat other foods, yes.

17 Q. From a health point of view, it would be a good idea to
eat other foods rather than sugar, which is, as you have
18 agreed, basically sort of empty calories?
              A. Yes.
    19
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is the following page trying to reduce
20 things to absolute simplicity good advice, the 8
              guidelines?
21 A. Yes, I think that sums it up pretty well.

22 MS. STEEL: In your third statement, or it might be your
second statement according to what files we are in.
    23
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can we put that away now, or do you want to
    24 come back to it?

25 MS. STEEL: No, that is all right.

26 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is it a different statement to the one you
have been referring to about the committees?
    27
MS. STEEL: I think so. I cannot remember which statement
28 that was. It is page 87 in my bundle I am on now.

29 MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is tab 6.

30 MS. STEEL: You said that there is no dispute that many of
McDonald's products are relatively high in fat and
