     1   Q.   How much do you think?  This is something which you have
     2        obviously thought about -- have you thought about it?
     3        A.  No, I have not.  I do not know.  I do not have
     4        responsibility for the operation side of the business, no,
     5        and I do not know it.  If I knew, I would tell you.

     7   Q.   Maybe as an individual you have walked down many high
     8        streets, yes?
     9        A.  Yes.

    11   Q.   In inner city areas, as you called them, where there may be
    12        a great deal of packaging as opposed to some areas where
    13        there may not be.  But if we talk about urban areas, is it
    14        not a fact of life that virtually every main street has a
    15        great amount of McDonald's packaging?
    16        A.  No, it is not a fact of life.

    18   Q.   Dozens, if not hundreds of items?
    19        A.  Not a fact of life.  I walked through Paddington this
    20        morning.  I found one McDonald's package which I disposed
         of.  So, I think that is a gross overstatement.

    23   MR. JUSTICE BELL:  There were two on Waterloo Bridge this
    24        morning, but I did not dispose of them, I am afraid.

    28   MS. STEEL:   Can I ask one other question -- actually it has
    29        just occurred to me -- it was only a couple of years ago,
    30        was it not, that all the carry-out bags were made of brown
    31        paper?
    32        A.  Yes.

    34   Q.   Prior to that they were made of white paper ---
    35        A.  Right.

    37   Q.   -- with "McDonald's" printed on the side?
    38        A.  They were bleached.  Now they are unbleached.

    40   Q.   That was just a couple of years ago, yes?
         A.  I think it was, yes.

    43   MR. MORRIS:  Sorry for jumping up and down, but you are
    44        responsible for packaging and purchasing, are you not?
    45        A.  Perseco is responsible for providing the packaging
    46        service to McDonald's.

    48   Q.   But you make the policies.  They advise you and you say
    49        "yes" or "no"; you give the OK?
    50        A.  It is not so much a policy, Mr. Morris.  The 
    51        specifications come from the USA.  They are sent to Perseco 
    52        who provide the service that we require on packaging.  So, 
    53        there is not -- you seem to think there are policies for
    54        everything but there is not.  This is a specification.

    56   Q.   But someone has to be responsible.  You are the responsible
    57        person for what packaging gets used by McDonald's, is that
    58        correct?  You are the top guy in the UK and, possibly,
    59        northern Europe?
    60        A.  The responsible people for packaging used by McDonald's
