Day 145 - 29 Jun 95 - Page 24
MR. MORRIS: Yes. (To the witness): Are you aware of any sweep
in the Bay area of San Francisco in or around June 1992
after which a number of employers were fined, including
McDonald's, by the Labour Department for violations under
the Child Labour Laws?
A. I am not aware of anything involving McDonald's. Did
you say San Francisco?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Was sweep a place or something -----

MR. MORRIS: No, a sweep is they look into whether child
violations were occurring on a large scale or not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, very well.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): Are you aware in -- that is not
specific. Yes, Rhode Island?
A. Where, sir?

Q. Rhode Island, in or before August 1990, McDonald's of North
Kingstown violated Child Labour Laws regarding improper
hours worked?
A. No. I have no knowledge.

Q. Those are specific alleged violations. There are questions
relating to things like the number of inspectors that are
available and things like that. Because of the order
I have done it in, I have to go through them again but just
pick out the general question which I deliberately missed
out. So I will just go back to -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What do you mean the "number of inspectors"?

MR. MORRIS: For example, is it true that in the Chicago area
there are only 15 inspectors who are responsible for -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you really think it will help put
questions like that, if you can roll it all up into one,
that even a large City like Chicago would only have, say,
so many inspectors, then we will find out whether Mr. Stein
can help us at all on it.

THE WITNESS: My Lord, can we get some specificity? There are
multiple agencies -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us wait and hear what Mr. Morris asks.

MR. MORRIS: Do you recollect that the Illinois Department of
Labour -- or is it a fact that the Illinois Department of
Labour had been criticised in 1990/1991 for not fining
companies that violated Child Labour Laws?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, we really cannot have this. What does it
matter if some busy-body, if that is what it was,
criticised the Illinois state government for not doing
this, that or the other. It is nothing to do with this
case.

MR. MORRIS: Is it a fact that the State Auditor General
criticised the Illinois Department of Labour?
