So why isnt it remotely popular in the west? (actually, i contradict myself - its hugely popular in the sense that people vote for collectivist ideas in politics (whether they realize it or not), but no one wants to 'go all the way' because enough people recognise their interests are threatened)

You need to accept that populations are *not* hapless fools being controlled by capitalist forces to disagree with socialism, but that they do so for many reasons of what they consider to be self interest - just like pro-socialists do.
