Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 30

     1 saturated fat?
              A. Is this in the statement?
     2
         Q. Yes, it is on the top of page 87.
     3
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very top of the page.
     4 A. Yes.

5 MR. RAMPTON: Could I have the internal number?

6 MR. MORRIS: Three, interim 3.

7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is tab 6; yellow five; tab 6, page 87.

8 MS. STEEL: You go on to say that the product range in
McDonald's is very limited compared with the variety of
9 foods currently available on the market?
              A. That is the nature of the business.
    10
         Q. You have also said, on the following page, that it is
11 virtually impossible to reach the COMA recommendations for
sodium with commonly available processed foods?
12 A. That is right, but again I think we have been over the
question of what the recommendation actually means.
    13
         Q. Right. Can we take it that commonly available processed
14 foods is including McDonald's food?
              A. Well, I had in mind more the processed foods that are
15 bought that people take home with them.

16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You had in mind what?
              A. Foods that people buy in supermarkets and take home
    17 and use themselves.

18 MS. STEEL: So are you saying that you think McDonald's
products are low in salt, sodium?
19 A. No. What I am saying is that the concentration of
salt or sodium in McDonald's products is in line with what
20 you would get in other processed foods.

21 MS. STEEL: Right. Bearing those things in mind, would you
agree that an average McDonald's meal is high in fat,
    22 saturated fat and sodium?
              A. Well, it depends on the type of meal that you choose.
23 What I would say is that there is no question that some
meal combinations that a person would have in McDonald's,
24 if you work out the proportions of fat, saturated fat and
salt, they may well come above the recommendations for the
25 total diet, in terms of concentration.

26 So if we are looking at the per cent of calories of fat,
saturated fat, the salt related to the weight, then on
27 that basis some of them would do. I do not think there is
any disagreement between us on that. I would emphasise
28 that, you know, it is important to understand that within
the McDonald's range there is a variety of different
29 compositions. So it does actually depend on what you
              choose.
    30
         Q. If we chose a popular meal, something like, you know, some
