Day 145 - 29 Jun 95 - Page 35
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not bother -----

MS. STEEL: If anyone wants to check, it is on the form.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We can check if need be. What we are
concerned with now is whether Mr. Stein can help on the
fact.

MR. MORRIS: We are going to go through lots of outstanding bits
and pieces.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If I may make a suggestion? If Mr. Morris
just indicates what broad topic we are on as you come to
each fresh one. No-one will hold it against you if you are
short in your answer. You need not give any explanation.
Mr. Morris will ask you another question if he wants more
information and, hopefully, before the end of this
afternoon Mr. Rampton will have the opportunity to
re-examine you anyway.

MR. MORRIS: If Mr. Rampton gives an indication of how long he
wants, we will make sure we finish by that time.

MR. RAMPTON: It should not really depend on that actually. It
should depend on the natural line of the cross-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The suggestion was made with goodwill.

MR. RAMPTON: At the moment after seven and a half days, or
whatever it is, of cross-examination, I have one question.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Allow Mr. Rampton about a quarter of an hour
just in case.

MS. STEEL: Sorry, there was just one thing I wanted to ask
about OCLs: In the UK it says that after a reasonable
length of time, i.e. two days for fillet and pies and three
days for french fries, a management person must do an
observation check list on the crew member. Would that be
similar in the USA?
A. The short answer is I do not recall anything that
specific in the US, but it has been a number of years since
I managed a store. I would only be guessing to give you an
answer, so I do not feel competent to give you an answer.

Q. Do you think that is a likely length of time?
A. Excuse me?

Q. Do you think that, obviously, it might be a bit
difficult -----
A. My Lord, I do not mean to give a long answer, but they
use a different term than what we do in the US. I do not
know what their procedure is here in England. You are
asking me to give you an answer to something that I really
do not have any knowledge of.

Q. So you do not know how long after a crew member started
working on a particular station that they would be given an
OCL?
A. Not offhand -- in England here? I would not have the
